10 Ways to ruin visitor experience on your website.

After a few weak opening posts, I am going to kick off the blog with something that I think is actually useful for ecommerce website owners: 10 Ways to ruin your visitor’s experience on your website.

10: Use as much Flash, Javascript, Ajax, and Java as possible.
Corporate and Business sites seem to be worst at letting this one get out of hand. At some point their web designer or team either learned how to make flash, or they just simply discovered it. Now we have flash entry pages, flash navigation, flash banners, Ajax navigation, Java Navigation, Javascript warnings, and a plethora of other worthless, unfriendly uses. As much as we would all love to think, most people don’t care how good of a graphic designer you have. Lucas Film LTD may be interested in your work, but the rest of us aren’t.

Keep your flash to a minimum, and make sure you use a tag for the users who don’t have flash. Use it for the occasional banner, but not for your global navigation. </p><p>If someone reaches your website and sees only this, it’s bad.</p> <p><strong>9: Disable Right Clicking.</strong></p> <p>See that button on your keyboard called ‘<strong>Prt Scr</strong>‘?</p> <p>That means print screen, and someone can copy your images whether or not you disable right clicks.</p> <p>I personally spontaneously right click my mouse all the time. This is probably the reason that I hate the 1 button mouses on Mac’s, and when I get an alert box every time I do it, I get a bit annoyed. Or more appropriately, I leave.</p> <p>Use a <a href="http://www.watermarkingworld.org/">digital watermark</a>. Place a <a href="http://bermangraphics.com/tips/table.htm">transparent gif</a> over your images. Do anything but disabling right clicking.</p><p><strong>8: Re-size your images only using the width=”” and height=”” html tags.</strong></p> <p>What do you get when you do this? Slow download speeds, and poor images. If you haven’t figured this out by now, you should probably hire someone else to <a title="E-commerce Website Development" href="http://www.vibrant-info.com/Ecommerce.html" target="_blank">create and manage your website</a>. Web browsers are less than adequate at properly resizing and interpreting the data from images that are a different size in the browser than the size of the actual image. The actual size of the image never changes, so even really small images take just as long to load as the originals.</p> <p>Re-size your images in an image editing program, or setup your server to re-size them on the fly. On the fly resizing is a fairly complex task, but can be done with several programming languages (not HTML).<span id="more-132"></span></p> <p><strong>7: Place Google adsense or Yahoo contextual ads everywhere you can fit them.</strong></p> <p>Any one who has used adsense or <a title="yahoo ads" href="http://advertising.yahoo.com/" target="_blank">Yahoo ads</a> know that every click gets you $10 or more, right?</p> <p>The best sites are the ones that ruin their website’s design by placing adsense everywhere. Its pretty obvious that these sites aren’t trying to provide any useful information. They’re just trying to get people to click on their ads.</p> <p>If you are actually trying to make a quality website that people want to come back to, keep the ads to the minimum, and cleanly integrate them into the website.</p> <p><strong>6: Force visitors to contact you through a complex proprietary system, but don’t let them get the support they want.</strong></p> <p>Large retail shopping sites seem to be very guilty of this. <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/contact/index.html">Google</a> can be pretty hard to get a hold of. I cringe at sites where the contact page is a glorified FAQ page. Sometimes I don’t want to answer 500 questions just to get to a form to hopefully contact the support department. <a href="http://www.ticketmaster.com/h/customer_serve.html">Ticketmaster</a> doesn’t even allow you to contact most of their departments even after they recommend you contact them through their online form.</p> <p>Almost as annoying was my last customer support experience with Dell. I got transferred 4 times through their online chat system because I wasn’t connected to the correct chat department. Eventually I did get to the correct department, which happened to be the first one I was connected to. After thirty more minutes of slow, painful typing to the Dell rep, he couldn’t help me and I had to call their support department on the phone.</p> <p><strong>5: Stuff your content with relevant key phrases you want to rank for.</strong></p> <p>Using your keywords in-front of <a href="http://www.allofficefurniture.com/">every word you possible can</a> is a great way to help your site rank in the search engines, and it definitely helps convert your visitors into customers.<a href="http://www.bestcreditoffers.com/">Making them bold</a> helps even more.</p> <p>The <a title="SEO" href="http://www.vibrant-info.com/search_engine_marketing.html" target="_blank">SEO</a> part may have been the case a few years ago, but as far as helping visitor conversion, well, not so much ever.</p> <p><strong>4: Use Frames</strong></p> <p>Frames went out of style about 10 years ago. There are still some great sites that use them which is pretty sad. Frames are terrible for usability. Scrolling doesn’t work the way most people want it to. It’s confusing trying to backup on a website with frames. The list wont ever stop.</p> <p>If you are still using frames, now is a great time to learn how amazing <a href="http://www.csszengarden.com/">css design can be</a>, or even table based <a title="website design" href="http://www.vibrant-info.com/website_design.html" target="_blank">web design</a>.</p> <p><strong>3: Don’t let visitors know how they can pay.</strong></p> <p>The first thing that I do when I get to a website with the intent on purchasing something, is figure out how I can pay. With the exception of some very hard to find items, if I cant see my available payment methods, I leave.</p> <p>I don’t want to wait until I register to purchase something <em>(discussed below)</em> from your site to see that you don’t accept credit cards. I want to know right away.</p> <p>Put your accepted payment methods on every page of your website. It will help.</p> <p><strong>2: Make sure you don’t include an internal search engine on your website.</strong></p> <p>Something that seems so simple, and is recommended in so many places, but is often forgotten. Even though internal search engines are not always the most efficient methods to find information, they are widely used.</p> <p>Sadly, three of my favorite blogs, which are some of the foremost expert resources in marketing and usability, don’t have internal search functions. <a href="http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/">Creating Passionate Users</a>,<a title="Blog" href="http://blog.vibrant-info.com/" target="_blank">Seth’s Blog</a>, and <a href="http://www.grokdotcom.com/">GrokDotCom</a> are all lacking even a basic search function. I recently found this out when I was looking for a specific post on one of the blogs. After my searching through the archives failed, I gave up. Needless to say that without a search function on any of the blogs, the search function didn’t even have an opportunity to fail.</p> <p><strong>1: Require your visitors to register with your website in order to make a purchase.</strong></p> <p>Why do you need your customers to register to place an order with you?</p> <p><strong>Honestly, why???</strong></p> <p>This is probably the biggest conversion killer out there. Working as a Web Designer

Website design, while a relatively new industry, is now an essential part of a company’s image, brand, and advertising, marketing and public relations campaigns. The side of web design that would be considered graphic design is the creation of the actual look and feel of a website. Many web designers are also involved in web development, creating the functionality behind a working website. Even if someone wants to just focus on the design side, an understanding of the technology behind websites is essential to create designs that are both attractive and functional.

Web design is a broad term used to encompass the way that is delivered to an end-user through the World Wide Web, using a web browser or other web-enabled software to display the content. The intent of web design is to create a website—a collection of online content including documents and applications that reside on a web server/servers. A website may include text, images, sounds and other content, and may be interactive.

Type of Work

Work for web designers can include:

  • Designing websites to hand off to developers
  • Designing web banner ads
  • Creating animated flash websites
  • Creating mockups and site wireframes
  • Understanding web technologies
  • Understanding browser and operating system differences
  • Working closely with web programmers

Software Used in Web Design

For someone working on the design side of website, Photoshop is the most popular software. Often a designer will create one or several layouts in Photoshop and hand them off to a developer, who will create a working site based on them. For those continuing into the development side, products such as Dreamweaver, Go Live, and countless HTML and CSS editing programs can be used.

The Technology Side

There are often differences between web designers and programmers, each with their own goals in mind. Web designers are looking to create the most beautiful site possible, while programmers want something fast and functional. Being a great web designer means understanding both sides, and creating websites that look good and that are designed with function in mind (therefore avoiding these differences). While the ability to code by hand may not be necessary, it is important to know what types of layouts are feasible, how they will appear in different browsers, and what typefaces and color combinations work well on screen rather than on paper. These types of questions make web design an interesting and challenging profession.

The web has grown into a real jungle, and finding cool new sites nowadays isn’t always the easiest thing in the world. If you have a Website yourself, you’re dealing with the other end of this issue. How do you get noticed online, and is there anything you can do to increase your popularity? There certainly is! Here are the top five ways you can strengthen your site and increase your online visibility.

Importance of SEO

If you own a local business and want to get more targeted traffic in the local listings, you should try local SEO. This article will be focusing on some effective ways to use local SEO to get your website a higher search engine ranking.

You should always aim at putting up high quality content on your site. What is the purpose of doing search engine optimization? Your main purpose is to get quality website visitors. Therefore, you need quality content on your site so that visitors will come and possibly buy something from you. Most of the people who will visit your site won’t be reading all of your content on the website, but they will simply go through it or scan it. So if you want to be sure that people read certain information, highlight it or use bullet points to call their attention to it. Another way to accomplish this is by using pictures. Additionally, don’t apply keyword stuffing on your site, as this will backfire and reduce the value of your site in the eyes of the search engines.

Why do you want to optimize your site with the search engines? In order to generate quality traffic to your website. For visitors to find your site interesting enough to explore it and purchase something, you have to give them useful content. The majority of people who visit a website don’t read every word, but browse around here and there. By using bold text, bullets or highlighting, you can make sure people notice the most important points on your site.

Diversifying your anchor text is something you need to do. Every SEO marketer knows the value of long tail keywords and how they can help you rank better in the search engines and when you’re working with Local SEO, that’s exactly what you’re doing. This will give you the opportunity to work with the different anchor texts and that means that you should try to have a large variety of diversified anchor text to expand your reach. As an example: “New York Chocolate Store” is just one option for chocolate sellers in New York.

It is also very smart to work on getting your company listed in the Yellow Pages directory (and other directories like it). You can start off with some of these sites such as YellowBook.com, YelloPages.com and SuperPages.com. You should know that YellowPages.com gets more than 100 local searches every month and it offers free listings for business owners. At the same time, SuperPages.com is well known for sending their listed businesses to the major sites like About.com and MSN. You can have a very basic listing with them for free.

Overall, the local SEO tips that we discussed above can make a big difference if you apply them.

Vibrant Info - E-commerce Online Business Website

Adding E-commerce encompasses so much more than a variety of templates and colors that attempt to match the look and feel of your current website. A few text rollover effects, animated graphics, brief descriptions, thumbnails and photos of the products really only provide you with an online catalogue.

Such issues as user interfaces, marketing, branding, merchandising, navigation systems, website architecture and data flow is of prime consideration in establishing a successful Internet presence. It also encompasses intangible elements, such as how the human brain breaks up information, eye hand co-ordination and just plain old human nature.

Successful websites make clear to the shopper which categories of products are available, and provide easy site-navigation links. From anywhere in these sites, the shopper can easily proceed to browse more products without having to waste time searching. It would seem fairly obvious that a good navigation system is required for a successful e-commerce site, but as you may have noticed, many sites on the Internet are sorely lacking in this regard.

Many companies are also spending significant amounts of money to launch E-businesses on the Internet. But how many of these companies are taking the right approach when it comes to building a memorable, positive brand image that online consumers will be attracted to in the long term?

A key issue is that branding in the online world is far more than just transferring your print brand identity to the Web. Yes, it includes a graphic design image, but your brand in the world of e-business is more largely affected by the interactive experience you provide your users. The Web is a medium that allows you to quickly build one-to-one relationships with your customers.

What is even more important is the quality of those relationships. Your Web site’s ability to engage your customers and facilitate an ongoing relationship with them is the real key to successful branding on the Internet.
